How to Work with People You Dont Like

How to Work with People You Don’t Like Do you find it hard to deal with someone you don’t like? I know I do. The great thing about life is that most of the time we can simply avoid these people. But we can’t always choose the people we work with, especially stakeholders who have a big say in how or whether we advance. It could be a client, a colleague, or even your boss. That’s why knowing how to build relationships with people you don’t like is an important skill. 5 Ways to get along with colleagues you don’t like If there’s someone you don’t like but still have to get along with, here are five things you can do. 1. Get to know them better It’s easy to make assumptions about other people, and sometimes those assumptions can be wrong. I once had a colleague who had no qualms about criticizing another team member’s idea in front of the entire department. Most of us assumed he was a jerk and avoided him if we could. It wasn’t until I was paired with him at a team bonding event that I got to know him. When others were bending the rules, he insisted on playing by them. And when others sprinted ahead, he made sure I didn’t get left behind. In the end, I discovered that he was a good person beneath that gruff exterior and we ended up becoming allies at work. “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” Abraham Lincoln What assumptions are you making and how could they be holding you back from developing a constructive working relationship? 2. Look for something you like I believe we can always find something to like about someone else, even if it’s the style of their shoes or the coffee mug they use every day. It could also be finding something you have in common, whether that’s liking the same music, coming from the same region, or sharing a hobby. You might have to do a little sleuthing. Next time you’re around the person or their desk or office, keep your eyes and ears open for clues that may lead you to find things you like about them. Finding that thing gives you something positive to focus on so you can build a relationship from there. It reminds me of the song “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” where the fact that both people like that movie is enough to form the basis for their relationship. Challenge yourself to find at least one thing you like about the person, no matter how small, and build from there. 3. Show some empathy Sometimes when people are hard to get along with, it’s because they’ve had a difficult past or are dealing with tough issues that have nothing to do with you. So instead of having a negative reaction or taking things personally, think about what might be causing their behavior. It doesn’t necessarily excuse their behavior, but it can explain it. What experiences might they have had as a child? What pressures and stresses are they operating under? Are there problems with their health or their family situation? While you may not know the specifics, considering their situation and circumstances can make a big difference to your own attitude toward them. Showing some empathy is the first step toward shifting your perspective. And that makes it possible to build a constructive working relationship. How could you start to show greater empathy? 4. Focus on a common goal When you don’t like another team member, it’s easy to focus on your differences. But that only puts more distance between you and reduces your ability to work together. Instead, focus on a common goal, like helping the team win or getting the project completed. Something that is a positive for everyone involved. For a real-life example of three individuals who were forced to work together on a risky mission, check out Adam Grant’s WorkLife Podcast on “How to Trust People You Don’t Like”. (Spoiler alert: the common goal was what saved the day.) And when you’re the team leader, getting your team to focus on a common goal is a great strategy for helping people build constructive working relationships. What’s the common goal you can all get behind? 5. Be glad you’re not married to them When I’ve tried all the other strategies and still struggle to get along with a colleague or client, I can always count on this strategy: I simply tell myself, “just be glad you’re not married to him (or her)!” I’ve also shared that with my team members when they’re the ones suffering from these difficult people. If nothing else, it reminds us to laugh. Then realize just how lucky we are that we’re only exposed to the misery from time to time! So, when you find yourself having to work with someone you don’t particularly like, no problem. Pick a strategy and start taking steps toward building a better working relationship. Now, I’d love to hear from you: Which of these strategies would work best for you? Leave a comment and let me know.

How to evaluate a job description - are you qualified -

How to evaluate a job description - are you qualified - There are a lot of elements to job seeking. In a perfect world, no job seeker would ever need to apply for a job the jobs would all come knocking. Well, clearly, this isnt a perfect world. Most job seekers are not in the position to move from job to job effortlessly. So, reviewing and evaluating job descriptions is a necessary evil. Its both a blessing and a curse that todays descriptions are so elaborate and LONG. Some of you will remember when applying for a job involved reading a three-line ad in a newspaper and hoping you would get lucky and hit the nail on the head with your application materials. Now, companies have no limits to the number of words they can use in their desired qualifications. If you are lucky, someone who really knows what the job involves will write the description, but you can be sure therell be a lot of words, plenty of lingo and probably a lot of qualifications to meet. So, whats the good part of looking at these job descriptions that dont seem to end? At least you get a good sense of what the organization values. If they want four of five key qualifications, they will list all of them (and then some), so you will know from the start their wish list. (In the old days, they may have left something off that would come back to bite you in the butt later in the process.) The other advantage to long job descriptions? You can use them to help connect the dots between what they need and what you offer. Connecting the dots is the key to success with applications. When you review a job description first, think about the type of organization. Is it a government job? If there are required minimum qualifications (for example, a four-year degree in a particular industry AND 4 years of related work experience) you are likely out of luck if you do not have those exact qualifications. Applying for that job without the minimum qualifications, unless you have some sort of great networking connection or otherwise have reason to believe that you are   special circumstance, is likely to be a waste of your time for a government job. Since targeting your resume for each job is important and targeting and cover letter writing takes your valuable time, looking at the situation with a realistic view is important. Does this mean that you should never consider jobs beyond your qualifications? NO! In fact, Ive written tips for applying for jobs that are a reach. However, its important to spend your application time well, so evaluating the job description is key. We all know that job descriptions often seem to be seeking the sun, moon and stars. Employers shoot for the moon. They want the equivalent of an accountant who has written a novel and has a perfect golf game! In other words, an unlikely combination! When desired qualifications include experiences you do not have, it can still be worth applying. As long as you can make a direct connection between what they want and what you offer, I advise going for it! Make a point to understand your skills and qualifications. Know your limitations and where you have potential to successfully stretch. A little self-assessment can go a long way. You must know yourself to sell your skills. If you apply for an interview for a position that is a stretch, be prepared to sell yourself and defend your ability to get the job done. Know what transferable skills you possess that will make you successful. You can apply for reach jobs until you are blue in the face, but if you dont know how to convince the employer that you CAN do the job, even if you havent ALREADY done it, youre going to be looking for a long time. Let me help get you started ahead of the job seeking pack. Learn more about what I can do for you. photo by cupe vampe

This means no sensitive data touches your servers, so hackers wont have access to your businesss data or customers credit card information if youre ever the victim of a cyberattack, Stripes rep told us.Stripe automatically implements several layers of protection specifically designed for web-based financial transactions. For instance, Stripes client libraries and mobile API meet industry standards such as PCI DSS requirements, so youre always compliant. Stripe is certified as PCI Service Provider Level 1, the highest level of security certification for the payment card industry. Radar uses machine learning to identify and block fraudulent transactions. It assigns risk scores to each payment and automatically blocks those it considers high risk.Two-factor authentication is also available to further protect your account from unauthorized access.Customer SupportIf you have any questions about Stripe, or trouble using it, the company offers the following resources to help you find answersEmail support for one-on-one helpA searchable database of articles and FAQsHow-to guides, tutorials and demo videosDocumentation on a wide variety of features and functionsReference guides for developers, coding and third-party integrationsYoull notice that Stripe doesnt give you direct access to its customer support team, meaning you cant call a representative on the phone when you need assistance. Youll have to start with email support a rep can then help you solve the issue online or give you a call. Stripe says this email-first system helps it provide faster support, but its definitely a drawback if you prefer to reach a representative directly when you need help.LimitationsStripe is an affordable and customizable online credit card processing service, but its highly technical. Although thats a plus for merchants who have development expertise or developers on staff, small businesses that want customizations will likely need to hire an outside developer to get the most out of the service. Even its website is intimidating for non-developers and doesnt make it easy to find its easy-to-use products the integrations, extensions and prebuilt checkout form.Stripe doesnt offer a virtual terminal for processing phone, fax and m ail-order purchases. Although you can manually key in credit card information in Stripe Dashboard, the company stresses that you cant use this as a regular method of accepting credit card payments, and the payment terms specifically mention this payment method as a prohibited business practice.Like other merchant aggregators, Stripe has many online complaints about held funds and sudden account terminations. Stripe addressed these issues in a letter to the Better Business Bureau. It explains that, per its service agreement, it may hold your funds or cancel your account if it detects a fraud risk, if your business uses the service in an unauthorized way, or if it considers your business high risk. For example, if your business has a sudden spike in chargebacks, Stripe may start holding your funds. If it discovers that your business sells products on its prohibited businesses list, it may close your account. To avoid these headaches, youll want to read the service agreement or contrac t before you sign up with Stripe or any other payment processing company.Ready to choose a credit card processing company? If Your Boss Says This, Its a Sign They Probably Underestimate You

If Your Boss Says This, Its a Sign They Probably Underestimate You Feedback is the key to success on any job, but some comments or responses may be warning signs of potential problems. Sometimes, the issue is a micromanaging babo. In fact, 59% of respondents in an Accountemps survey admitted to working for a micromanager at least once. If your boss uses the statements listed below, pay attention because there may be issues (real or perceived) with your work performance or attitude. Why? QuestionsIts a part of your bosss job to ask you questions and then provide feedback. However, according to Carisa Miklusak, CEO of tilr, The schriftart of questions asked could indicate a potential problem. She provides four examples of problematic why questionsWhy are you meeting with that person? Why did you do that? Why didnt you do that first? Why do you feel thats important? These schriftarts of questions could indicate that theyre concerned about your performance or losing confidence in your abilitie s, Miklusak warns. Please Let Me See Your WorkWhen youre a new employee, your boss might ask to see your work before it is sent out. Even after youve been with the company for a while, this might happen on occasion especially for a big project. However, Roberta Matuson of Matuson Consulting warns, If this is happening all the time, it means that your boss lacks confidence in your ability to do things exactly how he or she would like them done.Youre Ambitious/AssertiveDuring performance reviews, feedback can provide the type of constructive comments that can help to advance your career. However, women tend to receive vague feedback in performance reviews, while their male peers receive specific feedback with action plans and even sponsorship from their bosses, according to Dr. Patti Fletcher, a technology executive, gender equity advocate, and author of DISRUPTERS Success Strategies from Women Who Break the Mold.Vague feedback, in which no specific behaviors or scenarios are called ou t, with no actionable insights on what you should keep doing, whats working, what isnt, and areas of development, are red flags, Fletcher says. If your boss describes you as ambitious or assertive, you are probably not receiving a compliment (though if your male counterparts receive those same words as descriptors, they likely are receiving compliments), she explains. Without this insight, as well as the desired outcomes, women are not able to come to a common understanding and create mutual expectations -- in short, your boss will get frustrated and so will you.You Have a Lot Going OnIf youve been passed over for new projects or stretch roles, your boss may use an indirect approach to communicate a lack of confidence in your skills. And, according to Miklusak, this may be a gender-based response. Men are positioned based on their potential, and theyre asked if they are interested in taking on a big project, and they are part of the decision, she says.Women, on the other hand, are h ired or appointed based on experience, and if your boss lets you know that you were not chosen by saying things like you already have a lot going on, thats a red flag. Miklusak believes that this could be an unconscious bias, especially among male bosses, but she warns that not being allowed to participate in other projects or stretch roles can negatively impact your career.Other Red-Flag PhrasesGrant Findlay-Shirras, co-founder of Parkbench.com believes that there are other words and phrases that should be cause for alarm.Let me do that for youWhat are you doing? How are you (insert task)?According to Findlay-Shirras, These phrases and questions should alert an employee to the fact that they are not doing well, they are not fitting in, and they should do something about it.Tips to Reverse the SituationIf your boss underestimates you, fortunately, there are steps that you can take to reverse the situation. Sometimes, your bosss analysis may not be accurate, but in other instances, th ere may be performance issues that you are not aware of.Abbi Whitaker, co-founder of The Abbi Agencybelieves that employees who want to gain the confidence of their boss or teamberater need to go the extra mile. Go above and beyond stay late to get the job done by a deadline, and proof your work very carefully to ensure there are no spelling errors or other mistakes.Whitaker also recommends sending thought leadership articles to your boss - and include comments on how the lessons can be incorporated by the company. These actions demonstrate that you want to help drive culture and new ideas show that youre engaged as an employee, and someone I would definitely want to keep around for years, Whitaker explains.Sometimes, it may be necessary to take a more detailed approach to changing your bosss perception.Cynthia Bucy, senior career consultant at IMPACT Group, advises the following stepsAsk your boss if there any are concerns about your ability to accomplish the workAcknowledge any di fficulties dont try to cover up mistakesProvide details of your plan to accomplish work, including measurable milestones with deadlinesRequest checkpoint meetings to reassure your boss that youre on trackIf there have been problems in the past, recount steps taken to change and share successes those steps have led toEmphasize strengths and achievements from the past, as well as what youve learned that will lead to improved workRequest training/development opportunitiesIf your boss refers to you as being ambitious or assertive, Fletcher recommends asking for an explanation of those terms. Dont use this opportunity to argue, but to help your boss understand his/her unconscious bias, she says. When youre not assigned to new projects or roles because your boss says you have a lot going on, dont just passively accept this response if youre certain that you are an excellent worker who has good time management, multitasking, and organizational skills. Use data to explain why you would be a good fit, Miklusak explains. If you have personal or family commitments outside of work, she says this is none of the companys business if you excel on the job.
